Athens

The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel located on a rocky outcrop above the city of Athens and contains the remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historic significance, the most famous being the Parthenon. The word acropolis is from the Greek words ἄκρον and πόλις (akron and polis)
Location
Also called the Hill of the Muses, Filopappou Hill - along with the Hills of the Pnyx and the Nymphs - was, according to Plutarch, where Theseus and the Amazons did battle. Inhabited from prehistoric times to the post-Byzantine era, today the pine-clad slopes are a relaxing place for a stroll. They offer excellent views of Attica and the Saronic Gulf, well-signed ruins and some of the very best vantage points for photographing the Acropolis.
Location
Thiseio is popular for early afternoon or evening strolls with views of the illuminated Acropolis. It includes the pedestrianized Apostolou Pavlou street that rings the Acropolis. The National Observatory, a scientific institute for the study of astronomy and seismology has vintage telescopes on display and offers tours, while the Herakleidon museum hosts art and science exhibitions.
Location
In the shadow of the Acropolis and its ancient temples, hillside Plaka has a village feel, with narrow cobblestone streets lined with tiny shops selling jewelry, clothes and local ceramics. Sidewalk cafes and family-run tavernas stay open until late, and Cine Paris shows classic movies al fresco. Do not miss, one of the most idyllic neighborhoods in Plaka, Anafiotika. The picturesque whitewashed houses and narrow alleys are reminiscent of a Cyclade island village, called Anafi.
Location
It is the central, most important square of Athens from both a historical and social point of view, at the heart of commercial activity and Greek politics. The square is named after the Constitution that King Otto was obliged to grant after a popular and military uprising on 3 September 1843. It is located in front of the 19th-century Old Royal Palace, housing the Greek Parliament since 1934.
Location
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, SNFCC is a public space open to everyone. It has been a hive of cultural, educational, athletic, environmental and entrepreneurial activity that is constantly evolving. It includes the Greek National Opera, the National Library of Greece as well as the Stavros Niarchos Park, one of the largest green areas in Athens, covering 21 hectares.
Location
The Onassis Cultural Centre-Athens was inaugurated in December 2010, as a new cultural site accessible to all. Its mission is the promotion of modern cultural expression, the support of new Greek artists, the cultivation of international collaborations, the education and lifelong learning, as well as the co-existence and interaction of sciences, innovation and arts.
Location
The Theatre of Dionysus is regarded as the first sample of Greek theatres and the birthplace of the Greek drama. It was built into a natural hallow at the southern slopes of the Acropolis and it is the first theater in the world. This ancient theater was dedicated to Dionysus, the god of wine making and ecstasy, whose festivals was the driving force behind the development of Greek theater. Probably established in the late 6th century, the theater has been reconstructed many times since then.

*Lovely pool area
On the drive up initially disappointed with the area around the hotel which is salubrious to say the least. However it is a good location in order to get to all the main tourist attractions, so advice is to just be sensible metro nearby and Ubers are cheap. We did walk to and from acropolis and some other areas during the day. We had a refurbished superior room, the room itself was large with great views of the acropolis from balcony, however for a refurbished room the bathrooms really lack thought. There is a shower over a low bath, but it is extremely narrow so inevitably you adjust the settings every time to turn around or move. They would have been better to just remove the bath and have a cubicle or wet room. Hairdryer attached to wall in bathroom. Mini toiletries provided. Bed was very comfortable, pillows were good. Room was far too hot even with the air con set to the lowest so not sure how possible it would be to sleep in the summer months.. Mini fridge in the room with water replaced daily, slippers provided. The major issue with the hotel are the lifts. There are 4 however 2 were out of action for large portions of our stay, frequently had to wait extended periods of time or just walk up and down stairs. Some people were stuck in the lift at one point. The outside pool area is lovely, I imagine absolutely packed in the summer. Views from the top over Athens. Restaurant overlooks acropolis so lovely for breakfast and dinner. Cocktails were good (on the more expensive side for Athens but ok as it hotel prices) staff were great. Breakfast was definitely busy especially around 10am when the queue for coffee could be about 10 minutes. Breakfast food was typical hotel style. I wouldn't say it was a five star hotel, but the pool area definitely brings the rating up.... ++

*Would stay again
We booked The Stanley last minute due to an unsuccessful AirB&B, which we had to leave suddenly. When we got to reception, the staff were really pleasant, happy to help and did their utmost to get us a room ready ASAP. The room was clean and comfortable with a nice small balcony overlooking a courtyard. We had a problem with the hairdryer which was fixed immediately when reported. The only issue we had was the lack of elevators. There seems to be only two for the entire hotel (each fits just 4 people in), and one was out of order for our entire 4 day stay. We were on the 8th floor so wait times to get up/down were long. The views from the breakfast restaurant, pool area and cocktail bar (all on 9th floor) were gorgeous. A lovely view over to the Acropolis, particularly stunning at night when all lit up. Breakfast had a good selection, but sometimes a little crowded (but you are informed about this in the welcome leaflet). The cocktails from the bar were nice, albeit a little pricey at €14-18. The location of The Stanley is ideal, right next to the metro and the hop on/off bus stop. There are some lovely authentic restaurants round and some nice coffee shops too. We would stay here again if we returned to Athens.... ++

*Lovely Hotel
This is a fantastic hotel… the breakfasts had a great selection, rooftop bar had a lovely atmosphere, and all the staff were very attentive. Previous reviews have mentioned areas around the hotel are a little less salubrious, which I would agree with, however we found sticking the main roads, using the Metro and keeping our wits about us we were fine. The metro is a 2 min walk from the hotel, and has links to all of the main places in the city…. Would also recommend using it to get to and from the airport at €9 a head!!! Don’t make the mistake we did and get a metered taxi, it ended up costing us €70 Staff were very helpful, rooms cleaned daily!!! We really enjoyed our stay there, highly recommended... ++

*Fine Hotel with good room service, but with some flaws
Reasonably close to attractions like the Agora Museum and Hadrians Library. The elevators inside are quite slow, and the bathrooms inside the rooms don’t smell great. Otherwise, bedding is fairly comfortable and the breakfast buffet has a decent food.... ++

*A good central location hotel
A very nice hotel, relaxing and clean. Comfortable bed, great shower and good sound proofing. Convenient for all transportation around the city, although all you need is a metro card to easily get everywhere. Floor 8 is great one floor below the pool and bar. 811 has a partial view of the Acropolis and is on the square. Food and drink is good but prices are above local restaurants. Good service, nice breakfast selection, great coffee.... ++
